Eve: The Mother of Us All!

In this lesson the people who I teach already were very acquainted with the account of Adam and Eve so I did not tell that in the lesson. I will however give a quick account here for there could possible be someone who doesn't know the Creation and Fall story. So here goes...

"In the Beginning, God..." Genesis 1:1

There was nothing or no one else, no universe, no planets, no people, nothing. So God created the heavens and the earth. There was no form to the earth and it was dark all over. The Spirit of God moved over the waters. Then he said let there be light and there it was... light! He separated the Light from the darkness calling the light day and the darkness night. evening and morning were the first day.

Now, in my class just the other Sunday we had a discussion about how long it really took for the universe and all things we know and love to be created. I firmly and literally believe... evening and morning were the first day means a 24 four period.... One Day!

Now to save time and words I will tell the rest of the creation part a little quicker.

Day 2: God created the created the expanse of water above (atmosphere), and the waters below (the start of this planet)

Day 3: He created the earth separating the water from the dry land. He also created plants, vegetation, trees, all according to their own kind.

Day 4: He created the Sun and Moon and the stars to give light to the day and the night.

Day 5: He created all aquatic animals and birds according to their kind. He told them to be fruitful and multiply.

Day 6: He created all animals and Man. Now here is how Adam and Eve were created. First came Adam, he was formed from the dust of the earth in the image of God. He took Eve from Adam's side, one rib and made her, to be his companion because it was not good for man to be alone. The Bible says...

"Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” " Genesis 1:26

One of the names for Eve was man, just like Adam.

"So God created man in his own image,
      in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them."  Genesis 1:27

On Day 7: The heavens and the earth were completed and God rested. He blessed that day and made it holy and a day of rest. This is the reason Saturday was and is special to Israel and people of all the world. It is a rest day from the work of the week!

The at some point after creation the fall takes place, we do not know how long it was. God told Adam (not Eve) that there were two trees in the garden that were special. One was call the tree of life and the other was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The fall happen because Adam didn't lead and Eve was deceived. God told Adam that he was not to eat of the tree of good and evil for in the day that he did he would surely die.

One day Eve and Adam were walking through the garden. The cunning serpent asked Eve...

“Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

Eve said that God said they should not eat it of even touch it lest you die. The serpent said,

“You will not surely die.  For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

And here is the lie and deception, God told Adam they would surly die, but He was speaking of a spiritual death, a separation from Him. That in the day they ate they would know right from wrong and have a chance to do as they wished because of knowledge. They could choose between good and evil. To that point they only knew good.

Eve saw the tree was good for food and a delight to the eyes and could make a person wise. So she ate. Then she gave it to Adam and he ate it. It is at that point, Adam eating the fruit that they knew they were naked and had done wrong. They hid themselves.

Later God came looking for them and found them trying to hide. Be sure you can not hide from God. God asked why they were hiding, Adam said because we are naked. Now, God knew exactly what had happen but he wanted them to explain so He knew they understood why they would be taken out of the garden and start the process of dying.

As a result, the serpent became a loathsome creature to most human beings especially women, women were punished in conceiving and birth, and men had to work hard to till the ground and produce food.

That is the account of creation and the fall in a nut shell... you can read it all for yourselves in Genesis 1-3.

Here is the second lesson of the Women of the Bible that I am writing and teaching. I hope you enjoy it.

Eve: the Mother of Us All

Genesis 1-4; I Timothy 2:13

There are 4 names that the first female human being was known as.

First, was Adam, In Genesis 1:26-28 is says that God created man in Our likeness, let them have dominion over the earth… He created them male and female.

Then in Genesis 2:8-25, there is a detailed account of the creation of the male and female, in this account God called her a helper, a companion. He took her from his side. This is where Adam calls her woman, because she was bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh.

After the fall, in Genesis 3:20, Adam calls her Eve because she is the mother of all living things.

Everyone knows the creation account and the account of the fall. There is no reason to retell it all here. It is important to remember that Eve was not alone in the garden, and she was not told the whole truth by Adam or the serpent. Yes, she did fall to the wiles of Satan, she was deceived. Adam was the one who was given the command, he was not deceived, it was his decision to eat that was the problem.

As a result, we know that Eve was “cursed” to have pain in conception and birth. And that her desire would be her husband and she would desire to please him. Also, her husband would or should “rule” over her.  Did that mean that he could do whatever he wanted to her? No, he is supposed to be the head of the family, to lead the family.

Eve was the first mother, the first grandmother, and our greatest grandmother. Eve had many children, the first of which were Cain and Abel. As a result of sin and jealousy she was also the mother of the first murderer. How sad, the first human death all because of sin. Can you imagine what Eve must have felt?

God still had a plan, and Seth was born, Seth means placed, he took the place of the first born for Adam. We don’t know how many sons and daughters Adam and Eve had, Adam lived to be 930 years, and Eve must have lived about the same amount of time even though the Bible does not say.  Eve is an important woman in the Bible, in creation, and she should be important to us. If not for Eve, we would not be here.

Do you find yourself liking or disliking Eve? Why?

What lessons can we learn from the mother of all of us?

If you could ask her about her life, which part would you ask her about?

What does it say about God that he allowed the fallen woman to become an ancestor of Jesus, who would defeat sin and death?

What thoughts do you have about Eve that you wish to ponder?

Thanks for reading. God Bless You!
