Many of the Bible journaling ideas I get come from Pinterest. I will save all kinds of drawings that I might use as inspiration for future journaling. This one today is one of those I found about a week ago. I did change it a little but the inspiration was there.
When drawing this journal page, I realized that Psalm 136 was probably a responsive reading in the synagogues and temple during Biblical times. I imagined David standing in the Temple his hands held high to the heavens reciting the part about what God did, and the people following with
"For his steadfast love endures forever."
I could see a priest recounting all of the things God did for Israel, and the people with hands raised saying,
"For his steadfast love endures forever."
I can see a 12 year old Jesus in the temple, recounting all these things that he did for Israel and the astonished clergy repeating,
"For his steadfast love endures forever."
I have never really understood or enjoyed responsive reading. I am now seeing how it has merit in worship. It tells a story and offers time to reflect on just how good God is and who he is to us. As you read this passage, insert the phrase, "for his steadfast love endures forever." after each line.
1Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
2 Give thanks to the God of gods,
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
4 to him who alone does great wonders,
5 to him who by understanding made the heavens,
6 to him who spread out the earth above the waters,
7 to him who made the great lights,
8 the sun to rule over the day,
9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,
10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
11 and brought Israel out from among them,
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
13 to him who divided the Red Sea in two,
14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea,
16 to him who led his people through the wilderness,
17 to him who struck down great kings,
18 and killed mighty kings,
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
20 and Og, king of Bashan,
21 and gave their land as a heritage,
22 a heritage to Israel his servant,
23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
24 and rescued us from our foes,
25 he who gives food to all flesh,
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
God's steadfast love endures forever.
Thanks for taking time to read this post. God bless you all!
