Lately, I have seen a few shows and articles about influencers. I am amazed at all of the people in the world who are considered to be in this "profession". Don't get me wrong many of these people are in this "profession" for the right reasons. Some are not.
When I was growing up the people who influenced young people were not as easy to find or reach out to. We would see them on TV, in Magazines, or maybe be able to reach out by "snail" mail. The only influence that was within reach were parents, teachers, church, or peers.
I am wondering if the easy access to these individuals today, is a good thing. How many kids have been hurt because one of these people ate a Tide pod? Or shot someone because of hate being propagated. Again, don't misunderstand, there are a lot of good influences around, but the bad ones seem to get more visibility.
"But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be greatly enlarged, so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends." 2 Corinthians 10:13-18
I am taking a class about discipleship. I would like to be able to be an influence to the people around me, for good and not bad. In studying for this class I looked up influence in the Bible and found these verses. I think Paul is saying that the only influence he had with the Corinthians was the influence God gave him. He also says that he hopes that influence caused them to grow in faith and also be an influence. It isn't the person who has been an influence who should boast, but God will be boasted about and will commend the person who was an influence, for Him. I want to be this kind of influence. One who shares the love of God and helps others grow in faith and share their faith with others.
